In fact, many fear that the visit will exacerbate the crisis. China regards Taiwan as sovereign, while Taiwan insists on independence.
On the same day that Pelosi arrived, China deployed 21 fighter jets to Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ). On the same day, Beijing announced it was holding military exercises in response to Pelosi’s visit.
Beijing began training Thursday through Sunday at six points in the Taiwan Strait. These six areas are like blockading the island.
On the first day of the exercise, China fired 11 Dongfeng missiles into Taiwanese waters. Now the conflict between the US-China, and China-Taiwan is sharpening.
Seeing this condition, Singaporean observer, Kishore Mahbubani, said that although Beijing’s actions created tension and worried regional countries such as Singapore and the Philippines, China would not start a war.
“What these regional countries know is that China can’t do anything, it looks weak,” Mahbubani was quoted as saying by NPR on Friday (5/8).
He then said, “China has no choice but to react. At the same time, China does not want to start World War III.”
