China loses opportunity to mediate in Ukraine-Russia war, says EU Vice President Borrell

Beijing remains an important partner for the EU, but it has lost the opportunity to mediate between Ukraine and Russia, Borrell said.

China could long ago put pressure on Putin to stop the war and withdraw his troops, but this has not yet been done in Beijing, which means China has lost the opportunity to mediate in this warEC Vice President Josep Borrell said yesterday during the European Security and Defense Summit in Brussels.

On the one hand, the EU must act very diplomatically so as not to push the Russian Federation into the hands of the PRC, but, on the other hand, it is necessary to ask China to influence Putin, journalists quote Borrell from “Ukrinform“.

He noted the important phone conversation between Zelensky and Xi. However, the West should also demand that China approach the issue of war with full responsibility, since Beijing is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

At the same time, China has lost the opportunity to become a mediator in this war: despite its neutrality, the country has a pro-Russian bias. However, the so-called “boundless friendship” between Russia and China still has its limits.

Borrell recall that Russia has only 1% of world GDP, and China – 20%. Yes, Beijing helps and supports Moscow, but it still hasn’t gone as far as selling weapons. The EU and the West need to be more vigilant not to push the Russian Federation into the hands of Beijing.

The EU Foreign Minister stressed that China remains an important partner for the EU, and the annual turnover between the countries is $2.7 billion.

Recall that in March Borrell and Biden commented on the decision of the ICC to issue a warrant for the arrest of the Russian dictator.

Meanwhile, Borrell commented on the shooting of an unarmed Ukrainian defenderwho surrendered to the RF Armed Forces.
