China admits sending advanced weapons to Serbia, took 6 planes

BEIJING – A Chinese official confirmed on Monday (11/4/2022) that Beijing has made deliveries of military equipment to Serbia under a long-term partnership with the Balkan nation.

However, the arms transfer shook nerves in the West as the media warned of a “stockpiling of weapons” by “Russian allies” amid the Ukraine crisis.

Six Chinese Air Force Y-20 transport planes landed in Belgrade on Saturday to deliver their cargo.

“The deliveries are routine according to the plan for cooperation between countries,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters on Monday.

He added, “It has nothing to do with the current situation and does not target other countries.”

The Associated Press (AP) and other media speculated the plane was carrying an HQ-22 surface-to-air missile that Serbia ordered from China.
