Chile introduces ‘immunity passport’, against WHO advice

The Chilean plan is controversial. According to the Chilean Ministry of Health, “people who have already had the coronavirus are less susceptible to getting it again.” That is why the country is introducing an ‘immunity passport’, the BBC writes.

13,000 infections

In Chile, nearly 200 people have died from the effects of the coronavirus. More than 13,000 Chileans are infected.

Paula Daza, secretary of the Chilean Ministry of Health, told local media yesterday about the “immunity passport.”

Recovered from virus

According to Daza, people can demonstrate that they have had the virus, recovered from it, and spent 14 days in self-isolation. She emphasizes that people are not “immune” to the virus if they have an “immunity passport.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this poses the danger of the ‘immunity passports’. “There is no evidence that patients who have recovered from Covid-19 and have developed antibodies cannot become ill again,” the WHO said in a statement Friday.

Immunity passport dangerous

Simply put, anyone who has had the virus among its members could also be infected a second time. According to the World Health Organization, an ‘immunity passport’ could therefore even be dangerous.

People who think they are ‘immune’ may ignore the corona measures and thus increase the risk of infections.
