In the Kirovograd region, two children fell through the ice

Rescuers warn that severe frosts do not guarantee a safe rest on the ice and ask both children and their parents to be careful.

In the Kirovograd region, in the village of Zavalla, Golovanovsky district, two children born in 2009 and 2012, walking along the Southern Bug River, fell through the ice. They died. About this on Sunday, December 26, informs press center of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (GSChS).

The incident took place at about 14.00. The children fell through the ice and disappeared.

“At 15.30, rescuers found the body of the first child, and at 17.30 – the body of the second,” the rescuers said.

Eight people were involved in the search for the children, of which three were divers, as well as three pieces of equipment, including one boat.

Rescuers warned that even severe frosts do not guarantee the strength of the ice on the reservoirs. They also recalled the truth of safety on the ice:

  • going out on the ice is possible only in persistent frosty weather;

  • it is forbidden to go out on ice, the thickness and strength of which are unknown;

  • you need to cross reservoirs in specially designated and equipped places for this;

  • it is forbidden to go downhill on skis from a steep bank to ice that has not been tested for strength and thickness;

  • it is forbidden to gather on ice in large groups in one place;

  • you must not go out on the ice: at the junction of rivers; in the case of a fast flow of the river in this place; in the presence of boards, sticks and other objects frozen into the ice; in case of different colors of ice; with a strong temperature drop and warming;

  • it is prohibited to drink alcoholic beverages near water bodies;

  • supervise the leisure of children and explain to them the dangers of thin ice.
