Child Victims of Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza

Khan Younis: Layan al-Bass would cry out as the pile of painkillers went down: “I don’t want a fake leg.”

This 13-year-old girl is in Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. She doesn’t want a prosthetic leg to replace the one she lost in the war. “I want my leg. They can provide it. “How can I go to school without legs when all my friends are walking?” she cried. She is not aware of the fact that in the current situation she may not even get a prosthetic leg.

This is the case not only for Layan, but for hundreds of helpless children in Gaza.

“Am I not near? “Everything will be fine,” said mother Lamia Al Baz, trying to comfort Layan. They have injuries. The lion lost its leg in an Israeli attack in Al Kharara district last week. Lamia is 47 years old. Their sons Ikhlas and Khitam and two grandsons were killed. One of them is Ikhlas’s baby who is only days old. The family came here for Ikhlas’s delivery service.

“Their bodies were scattered. I recognized them by seeing Khitam’s earring and Ikhlas’s thumbs” – Lamiya quipped.

Lama Al Aqa, 14, who was fatally burned in the airstrike, and her 15-year-old sister Sarah, are in adjacent beds in the hospital’s burns ward. Sara’s twin sister Samay and brother Yahya were killed in the October 12 attack. “Can’t bear the pain. But he got his life back, praise be to God,” said the lama. Her leg has also been amputated. But there is a determination on that face that he will not let that affect his future.

“I’ll get a prosthetic leg. I will continue to study. The dream is to become a doctor. I will achieve that,” says the Lama.

Many children come to the hospital with injuries. Hospital director Nahed Abu Tayima says the only way to save life is to amputate the injured legs as there is no medicine or other facilities.
