Chevrolet Niva will move to the main conveyor of AvtoVAZ – Autoreview

At the end of last year, AvtoVAZ completely bought out a joint venture with the General Motors concern, which has been producing Chevrolet Niva SUVs since 2002. Now the fate of the model is completely in the hands of AvtoVAZ: in the summer, Niva will become a Lada and undergo restyling. And later it can move to another conveyor.

From the very beginning, Chevy Niva produced at a separate enterprise with a capacity of 98 thousand cars a year, which is located next to AvtoVAZ, although all stamping, engines and transmissions come from the main plant. But rumors that the assembly of cars will soon be transferred to the AvtoVAZ conveyor will probably be confirmed. According to the unofficial portal Lada.online, the Niva’s body was driven away on the third thread – so far without assembly.

The third thread of the main conveyor has a difficult fate. Back in 2014, it was modernized in accordance with the requirements of the Renault-Nissan Alliance Integrated Manufacturing System (AIMS) production system to launch production of Lada Vesta here. But in the end, its release began in Izhevsk, and only the Priora and Lada 4×4 assembly was moved to the third string. As a result, the modern production line is not loaded: with a capacity of 300 thousand cars last year, only 39 thousand Lada 4×4 SUVs left it. The transfer of the Chevy Niva (already under the Lada brand) could increase the conveyor load, although not by much: last year, GM-AVTOVAZ JV produced only 20 thousand cars. According to preliminary information, the change of the conveyor will take place in 2021.

What will happen to the vacant facilities of the former joint venture? No official information yet. But it is likely that after the modernization, the release of models that are now off the assembly line of the Renault company in Moscow will be arranged here: these are Arkana, Kaptur, Duster and the related Nissan Terrano crossover. If AvtoVAZ and Renault nevertheless come to such a decision, then the fate of the capital’s factory looks foggy – an enterprise with a capacity of 190 thousand cars per year can completely stop its work.
