Chelsea’s Stratospheric Offer to Sign Edson Álvarez: More Than 50 Million Euros!

Chelsea was ready to go all out in order to sign Edson Álvarez.

Nathan van Kooperen, agent of the Mexican midfielder, assured that in January 2023 they were very close to signing with Chelsea, which made a stratospheric offer to Ajax in order to obtain the Mexican’s services.

The agent explained that Chelsea was always willing to go to great lengths with Ajax in order to sign Edson, but the reasons for his non-arrival were never due to a money issue.

“Chelsea were prepared to go very far. “They wanted to do everything possible to bring him to Chelsea,” Van Kooperen said in an interview with ESPN.

CHELSEA OFFERED MORE THAN 50 MDE!

The Mexican’s agent explained that the offer for the then Ajax midfielder was higher than the 50 million euros that had been initially reported. That amount would have made Álvarez the most expensive signing for a Mexican in the history of European soccer.

“But Ajax did not have a replacement ready, so they were not willing to cooperate. They thought that (qualifying for) the Champions League was very important.

“Chelsea went up to 60 million euros,” stated Edson’s agent.

WEST HAM TOOK IT IN THE SUMMER!

After failing to sign Edson, Chelsea prioritized two other targets in that position. The Blues went for the signings of Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo, for whom they spent more than 100 million euros in each operation.

Already in the summer of 2023, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund fought hard for the signing of Edson, but finally the English team had no problems disbursing the 38 million euros that Ajax demanded for the Mexican.

Today, Álvarez is one of the important pieces in the team of David Moyes and West Ham, which this season is fighting for the Conference League and the Premier League to stay in European cup positions.
