According to several Englishmen, the former French international (71 caps) is leaving Chelsea where he returned in 2019 as a “technical mentor” to certain young players and those who were on loan after the appointment of Frank Lampard as coach of the first team. The former midfielder, who played 217 games for the Blues (2003-2008), is understood to have left after a mutual consent agreement.
This is the second departure in just a few hours from the London club since the Spaniard Bruno Saltor, who had taken over as interim on the Blues bench at the aftermath of Graham Potter’s ouster at the end of last season, also packed up.
Chelsea in crisis
Alongside the commotion behind the scenes, the situation is tense for Chelsea. While the club has multiplied the maddening expenses in recent months during the transfer windows, the performances on the field are not up to par. Already deprived of the European Cup after 12th place last season, the men of Mauricio Pochettino have won only one of their six Premier League matches, against Luton Town on August 25 (3-0). Since this success, Malo Gusto’s teammates have had one draw and two defeats, the last of which last weekend at home against Aston Villa (0-1). A setback which leaves Chelsea in a worrying 14th place.
