Cheater record banned for life: “Highest number discovered”

Since the 2000s, the tennis world has had major problems with match-fixing and has invested considerable resources in expanding anti-corruption efforts.

The work was initially carried out through the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), which since 2020 has been called the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which in addition to match-fixing also deals with doping cases.

Most importantly, match-fixing takes place at a lower level than the ATP tour, where a common pattern is that semi-professional players are offered money or blackmailed into losing certain matches, sets or matches.

Sebastian Rivera banned for life

57 players are on the ITIA list of players banned for life for doping or match-fixing offenses. Now another name is added: the Chilean Sebastian Rivera. The 36-year-old was at best 705 in the world, but worked as a manager after his playing career.

He has now been convicted by the ITIA on 64 counts of match-fixing and is banned from training, playing or participating in tennis competitions. In addition, he is forced to pay a fine of 250,000 pounds, equivalent to 3.1 million crowns. The news has echoed in the tennis world because it is a record fall.

“The ITIA can confirm that Sebastian Rivera, a former Chilean coach and player, has been banned for life from the sport after 64 match-fixing cases, the highest figure ever discovered by the ITIA or its predecessor Tennis Integrity Unit,” writes ITIA. on its website.
