Characteristics of Dengue Fever with Other Diseases

KOMPAS.com – Fever is a symptom dengue which can be confused with other diseases, but there are characteristics to watch out for.

Dengue is a disease fever sudden high fever caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Symptoms of dengue include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Pain behind the eye and photophobia
  • Rash on the skin
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Dr. dr. Anggraini Alam, Sp.A(K), Head of UKK Infection & Tropical Diseases, Indonesian Pediatrician Association said that dengue symptoms have similarities with other diseases, so it can be misunderstood.

“Dengue has an incubation period of 1 week which has dynamic and systemic changes,” said Dr. dr. Anggraini in the “Media Briefing Be Alert and Smarter in Anticipating Dengue Transmission” on Tuesday (19/4/2022).

So, some symptoms can appear similar to other diseases. For example, the appearance of a fever and rash is similar to the disease:

  • Rubella
  • Measles
  • Meningococcal infection
  • Chikungunya
  • Scarlet fever
  • Covid-19
  • Drug reaction.

However, Dr. dr. Anggraini said that the symptoms of dengue fever have certain characteristics.

Dengue is a disease that consists of 3 phases, namely:

  • Fever phase: fever lasts 2-7 days.
  • Critical phase: plasma leakage lasts 24-48 hours on day 4-5.
  • Recovery phase: lasts 2-4 days.

In dengue fever, the body temperature can reach more than 40 Celsius and it is difficult to come down, even though it has been compressed with warm water and using fever-reducing drugs.

Then, the fever can drop suddenly, but only briefly about 24-48 hours. After that, the fever can rise again and the critical phase of dengue begins.
