The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Mayta, denied on Sunday the existence of an agreement for the exploitation of Bolivian lithium with Russia.

He made reference to the issue after the newspaper El Potosí published on its cover the note “Foreign Minister of Bolivia reaches an agreement with Russia to exploit Potosino lithium.”

“It seems that there is a significant error there. In our meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister (Sergey Lavrov), we did not establish an agreement on lithium, ”said the Bolivian head of diplomacy in an interview with the state channel Bolivia TV.

He assured that the note from the Potosi media does not correspond to the truth and that the information is erroneous.

“We hope you can go to your source for information that adjusts to the veracity,” he said.

Foreign Minister Mayta met in Moscow on October 22 with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov.

Both authorities reaffirmed the vocation of integration, complementarity, solidarity and cooperation between Bolivia and Russia in bilateral, regional, multilateral and commercial aspects.

The Government launched in April, through the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energies, an international call for international companies to contribute to the direct extraction of lithium. The objective was to accelerate the industrialization process with the necessary technology.

The Plurinational State includes in its planning that the companies applying for the international call can allow an evaluation of lithium resources and with the results advance to the stage of industrial plants with a minimum environmental impact due to the dynamics of the process of obtaining cathodes and batteries.
