Champions League Next Season No More Two Legs?

Lisbon

The coronavirus pandemic is compelling UEFA change the format Champions League this season. UEFA also opens the opportunity to continue to use this new format in the future.

The 2019/2020 Champions League event was stopped in mid-March due to the corona virus pandemic. The new competition resumed on August 7 with a new format.

There are no more two-leg matches in the quarter-finals and semifinals. The match is only played one leg to shorten the duration of the competition. Just like the Champions League, the Europa League is also continued with a new format.

The knockout phase of this season’s European competitions was also held in one location. The eight teams that reached the Champions League quarter-finals played phase matches knockout in Lisbon, Portugal. While the continuation of the Europa League will be held in Germany.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin judging the new formats of the Champions League and Europa League to make the competition more attractive. UEFA will discuss the possibility of implementing this new format in the future.

“I have to say this one-match system seems more attractive to me than the two-legged system,” Ceferin said Sky Sports.

“This is one of the interesting things that comes out of the pandemic. We have to implement a system like that. We have to play like this, but in the end, we see a very interesting system.”

“Now, it’s quite complicated to put the final eight format on the calendar. But we see people want an interesting match, that in one game, every team can beat any team in the Champions League or Europa League.”

“So this is something that should be considered for the future. I think September or October, we have to start talking seriously,” he said.
