Champions League game Liverpool caused 41 extra corona deaths’

The Champions League match between Liverpool-Atlético Madrid on March 11 may have killed 41 people. Their coronavirus infection could be traced back to Anfield stadium.

The Times writes this on the basis of calculations by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. “A week later, the virus spread widely in England. Models show that 25 to 35 days later, there were 41 additional deaths in nearby hospitals.”

50,000 spectators and only one elbow

More than 50,000 football fans were in the stands to watch the return of Liverpool in the eighth finals of the Champions League against Atlético. They saw the Spaniards win 3-2 after extra time.

Trainers Jürgen Klopp and Diego Simeone gave each other an ‘elbow’ before the game instead of a handshake, but otherwise hardly any protective measures were taken. The British government saw no reason to do so.
