Champardennais Sites in the Running for UNESCO World Heritage Status

Several Champardennais sites are in the running to become a UNESCO world heritage site. 12 Marne sites and 4 Ardennes sites are candidates. They are among the 139 French and Belgian funeral and memorial sites to have submitted their application almost 10 years ago.

This Wednesday, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia meet the members of UNESCO. They will study the various applications from sites around the world requesting inclusion as World Heritage.

Of the 139 French and Belgian funeral and memorial sites which submitted a joint application, 12 are located in the Marne and 4 in the Ardennes.

Franck Lesjean, Cultural Affairs project manager at the Marne department, worked with the association “Landscapes and Sites of Memory of the Great War” which defends the candidacy of the Champardennais sites. He explains to us that such an application takes years to prepare and that nothing is won in advance, even when the application is selected.

From 12 Marne sites requesting inclusion as UNESCO World Heritagewe find among other things:

  • The French Memorial to the Battles of the Marne in Dormans
  • The Italian cemetery of Bligny in Chambrecy
  • The French communal cemetery and the French chapel of Montdement-Montgivroux
  • The French National Opera Necropolis in Souain-Perthes-lès-Hurlus

In the Ardennes, the candidate sites are:

  • The German military cemetery of Chestres and the French national necropolis of Chestres in Vouziers
  • The German Monument in the Saint-Charles de Sedan cemetery
  • The German military cemetery of Apremont
  • The French military square of the dead of November 11, 1918 in Vrigne-Meuse
