Champagne or sparkling wine? France and Russia argue over protected name

According to the newspaper The Guardian, champagne brings in the drawers of 360 producers in that region for 4.2 billion euros every year. About half is exported, mostly to the American and British markets. This is followed by Japan, Germany, Belgium, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain.

Russia is much less of a sales market. Champagne – the real one from France – has a market share of 13 percent and only 2 percent of that is for Moët Hennessy, which is not that much. Yet Paris and the EU have no choice but to respond to this attack on a brand name.
