Chamber struggles with a possible return of the Golden Coach due to a controversial depiction of slavery | show

The restored Golden Coach is today on display in the Amsterdam Museum after a five-year absence for eight months. What happens next is unclear and poses a dilemma for political parties. A painting can be seen on the carriage showing half-naked slaves offering their riches to the royal family.

The left-wing parties and D66 believe that the Golden Coach belongs in a museum. The right-wing parties FvD, JA21 and PVV believe that the king should be able to take to the streets. Others are still hesitating, such as VVD and CDA.

The carriage may never again be used as a carriage on Prinsjesdag, it must enter the museum, according to Sylvana Simons of BIJ1: “It must finally end with the parading of colonial images as a form of display of power.” FVD MP Gideon van Meijeren: “We should not be emotionally blackmailed by a small group of pushy extremists who see racism under every stone.”
