Chainlink nodes spent 700 ETH to process requests during a spam attack

Nine operators of Chainlink nodes, which play an important role in the DeFi segment, have come under attack. As a result, 700 ETH were spent from the hot wallets of the project. The Block.

A source familiar with the situation reported that on August 30, attackers sent requests to nodes to obtain price data. As a result, their operators were forced to spend significant funds on Ethereum transaction fees.

In particular, the operator of the Certus One node lost 20 ETH, worth $ 7,500 (at the exchange rate at that time) during the attack.

Chainlink representatives confirmed the attack, but declined to clarify its scope. They noted that a short spam attempt was detected on Sunday, which “lasted for about two hours.”

Chainlink emphasized that the attackers’ plan failed, “the attack did not significantly affect the operation of the network and its price channels.”

“The failure to spam the Chainlink network is proof of how resilient it has become.”

Chainlink oracles transfer data to smart contracts on the blockchain through node operators. The latter are rewarded for their work in LINK tokens.

An attacker can carry out an attack using unused operator gas to issue Chi tokens using the 1inch.Exchange decentralized exchange aggregator.

Chi is a tokenized form of gas. The coin allows you to hedge the risks of excessive gas price volatility.

As soon as the attacker sends a request for price data, the node that “wastes a lot of gas” responds accordingly. Thus, the organizer of the attack managed to make money “on some of this gas,” the source said.

Taking advantage of the situation with high gas prices, the attacker issued Chi tokens. He then traded the coins for the more liquid ETH and leveraged the power of the Tornado Cash Ethereum mixer to cover his tracks.

Recall Chainlink intends to expand the capabilities of oracles using the DECO solution developed at Cornell University.
