Certain motorists with revoked license will be able to return to driving in NC

Raleigh.- A light at the end of the tunnel has been presented for more than 185,000 people with revoked licenses in North Carolina for not paying fines, penalties or court costs.

Those individuals, in less than two months, will receive a special notice by mail or email about their ability to lift those revocations. The benefit of regaining the right to drive is related to North Carolina General Statute 20-24.1 for the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV).

This legal statute protects if the non-payment was unintentional and due to your inability to pay the amount due. A person can make this showing of inability to pay by filing a motion for relief of fines and fees with the sentencing court.

The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts has created a motion template that can be used for this purpose: Form AOC-CR-415.

For a period of six months after the settlement announcement, the NCDMV will mail a copy of this model motion to drivers who request it.

Individuals with questions about the settlement or their options for lifting existing driver’s license revocation orders or preventing a pending revocation order from going into effect can contact www.resolvetrafficdebtNC.org.
