The MoMAfaithful to the contemporaneity of its programming, has appointed Wales Bonner for the creation of its 16th edition of Artist’s Choice, an exhibition which, each year, reveals the inspirations and influences of artists in full resonance with our times. His exhibition Spirit Movers will celebrate the cultural heritage of the African Diaspora, embellished with history, culture and connections.

A composite and cultural assemblage

After several years of research in the archives of the disparate collections of the MoMA, Wales Bonner decides to organize his exhibition around the themes of musicality, storytelling and the intersection of cultural narratives. Through his selection, the sculptures are no longer simply surfaces, but are transformed into structures steeped in history and symbols, which Wales Bonner explores according to his fascination for rites and customs.

For the occasion, the MoMA will show, in particular, Last trumpetthe key work of the exhibition signed by Terry Adkins, a sculpture composed of various wind instruments, which highlights sound, performance and elegy. In the rest of the course, the references are multiple, and great personalities like Duke Ellington emerge as the works unfold. Together, they are no longer static objects or images, but dynamic entities where performance, music and body merrily intertwine.
