Part of these were collected in the book El cine, décima musa (Ediciones Icaic, 2011), compiled by researcher Salvador Arias, where Carpentier’s texts on cinema known to date appear for the first time, published on the website of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industries (Icaic).

They appear organized chronologically under the title with which he headed his first article on the subject, in El País, on July 3, 1925; which come from different press organizations.

Some of them, originating during his stays in Paris and Caracas, together offer a vast amount of information on the development of cinema, mainly between 1925 and 1955, even though the volume also includes opinions extracted from conferences and interviews on the subject. .

In addition to this, in 2016 Ediciones ICAIC, together with the Alejo Carpentier Foundation, published an extensive essay by researcher Luis Álvarez Álvarez where he shows how the author of The City of Columns produced “a thought about culture of transcendental importance for the understanding of the Latin American specificity.

Under the title Alejo Carpentier: the greatest faculty of culture, this text made it possible to understand other areas of creation and thought bequeathed by Carpentier, according to the source.

In this way, both books allow us to understand the relationship of the essayist, critic and journalist with cinema and culture, while they show the interest of the publishing house in contributing to the debate on the history, criticism and cultural thought of authors and movements. aesthetic. Carpentier was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, on December 26, 1904 and died in Paris, France, on April 25, 1980.

In 1977 he was awarded the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, considered the highest recognition for the creative work of Spanish and Latin American writers.

This award is given to authors whose work has contributed to significantly enriching the literary heritage in the Spanish language.
