Celebrating Latvian Culture: The Vibrant Portraits of Taisa and 59 Other Personalities at the Esplanade Exhibition

The song festival is still one of the main events in Taisa’s life. Her portraits and those of 59 other personalities can be viewed by anyone on the Esplanade.

An exhibition was opened there on Monday in honor of those who have dedicated their lives to celebrating and nurturing Latvian culture. The purpose of the exhibition is to break the usual style and show these people in a different way.

“Photos were needed for the regular holiday catalog, the idea arose that it could be done differently. In the end, the exhibition turned out in such a way that if you look around, the person is not in such a rigid shape, more lively, more attractive pictures were made,” says Daina Markova, executive director of the XVII General Latvian Songs and XVII Dance Festival.

And already in the first hour, the exhibition gathered a large number of interested people.

“Sometimes you can get to know the conductors themselves, I’m a dancer myself, so it’s interesting for me, I’m an amateur photographer, so it’s interesting to look. There is no such classic picture, no. More humane, different perspective, different emotions, interesting,” says Eric.

“I am interested and like it, but I had hoped that there would be more about the former chief conductors and managers. I know many of them, I follow everything that happens, I really enjoy it,” says Līga.

There is also a large-format environmental object nearby – a moving folk costume skirt. They twist in a vortex in response to passers-by. The author of the idea states that she wanted to create winged feelings in people.

“Looking at the way folk costumes rotate, there is always a feeling that it is too short, and it is very important to show the moment that it lasts longer. Make it more accessible to all. People can approach and spend a longer time here,” says “Magic B40” artist Dace Izabella Grundstein.

On the other hand, those who also want to leave something lasting can find a large wall of wishes nearby. Passers-by do not miss the opportunity and one by one they start writing.

“Today we have a day off, so we are having fun with cultural events. Me and my son in the parks. We have a festive feeling. People are open, smiling. What is called in the forest, it is called! May everyone have a beautiful holiday and a good time!” says Renate.
