CEGEP students worried about their finances

The Quebec College Student Federation (FECQ) on Sunday asked the Minister of Higher Education, Danielle McCann, to invest as quickly as possible the $ 400 million transferred from Ottawa to help students.

The association wants this amount to be transferred directly to the Quebec Loans and Bursaries Program.

This program, which normally amounts to a little over $ 1 billion per year, could therefore be increased by almost 30% for the fall of 2020.

The student PKU, which is $ 1,250 per month, will end at the beginning of October, which will only amplify the financial stress of CEGEPs, according to the FECQ.

“At the moment, we are in a vacuum, we are in a vacuum, students are waiting for answers to make decisions,” says Noémie Veilleux, president of the FECQ.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and numerous business closures, many students have lost their jobs.

For lack of sufficient funds, some will be forced to abandon their studies.

“For now, the dropout date has not passed, so people are waiting for news. But yes, there was dropping out of school, ”admits the president of the FECQ.
