CeeDee Lamb is ready to follow in the footsteps of legendary Cowboys wide receivers

The number one receiver for the Dallas Cowboys has similar legendary status as the starting quarterback.

You don’t have to say the full name of receiver number one without knowing who we’re talking about.

We’re talking about Hall of Fame talent and players who played iconic plays like Michael Irvin or Drew Pearson.

You could always talk about Amari Cooper as the No. 1 receiver, but it seemed like he always had one foot out of here, even after signing a five-year, $100 million deal in 2020.

It felt that way the moment the Cowboys drafted CeeDee Lamb as a first-round pick in 2020, nearly a month after Cooper signed that deal.

It was only a matter of time before Lamb became the Cowboys’ leading receiver.

In March, when Cooper was traded to Cleveland for a fifth-round pick in conjunction with the sixth-round trade, Lamb became the Cowboys’ No. 1 receiver, a challenge he welcomes.

“Every time I wake up and come to practice it’s like I understand the situation and I understand what I have to do here,” Lamb said.

Lamb’s elevation to the top spot on the receiving corps didn’t go unnoticed by his quarterback Dak Prescott.

Prescott, the voice of this team, made a request: He called Lamb to move his locker next to his.

For several years, Prescott kept Cooper near his locker.

Now it’s Lamb.

“My other two locker mates left, so I was kind of lonely and I decided, you know, he’s the man,” Prescott said.

“So it’s more conversations as he’s right there near me to talk and communicate better,” the Dallas quarterback said.

Being the number one wide receiver also pushes Lamb to become a mentor to some younger wide receivers.

Rookie wide receiver Jalen Tolbert will be asked to do more in 2022 until veteran Michael Gallup returns from his recovery from a torn ACL.

Prescott will have to develop a bond on the field with veteran James Washington, and then, of course, there’s Lamb, who is entering his third NFL season.

Lamb became the second-fastest receiver to reach 1,000 yards in franchise history, behind only Bob Hayes who holds the record with 13 games. Lamb did it in 17

Lamb also tied the franchise record with Herschel Walker for the fastest player to reach 100 receptions in 22 games.

While Lamb is setting records, he is also growing as a player.

“I’m still young,” said Lamb, 23.

“I’m still learning, I’m still growing, I’m still looking to get better, but also trying to be a role model for rookies.”
