CDC – Telemundo Miami (51)

Florida reported more than 8,700 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CD) released Saturday.

The 8,709 cases reported to the CDC by state, more than quadruple the 1,905 reported Sunday.

New cases were slightly below the 8,785 reported Thursday, but have been increasing steadily all week with 3,036 cases on Monday, 4,137 on Tuesday and 6,846 on Wednesday.

Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties saw increases in their positivity rate near or above 6 percent and with new cases per capita at levels that put them in the “high” risk category for transmission, according to with the CDC.

Monroe and Orange counties are also in the high risk category.

According to the Florida Department of Health’s weekly report, released Friday, Miami-Dade and Broward had the largest increase in cases for the week.

Miami-Dade reported 11,689 cases for the week of December 10-16, while 4,770 new cases were reported in Broward and 2,445 in Palm Beach.

Despite the increase, the numbers are still well below the rebound in COVID-19 cases in the summer, when more than 20,000 cases were reported daily.

Given the increase in cases and the advance of the omicron variant, Miami-Dade reinstated an emergency order that requires hospitals to report their number of COVID-19 cases daily, as well as the availability of beds and artificial respirators.

Since the pandemic began in 2020, Florida has reported more than 3.7 million coronavirus cases.

As of Friday’s report, the number of deaths associated with COVID-19 in Florida stands at 62,193, according to CDC data.
