CCSS administered 244,343 vaccines in a week and 1.4 million people already have at least one dose against COVID-19

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) delivered on Tuesday the weekly report on the progress of the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 in Costa Rica.

According to the data provided by the institution and analyzed by Delfino.cr, during the previous week (twenty-fifth campaign), 244,343 doses of vaccine were applied, the second highest figure since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, and which represents a deceleration of -1.27% compared to the twenty-fourth week when 247,492 doses were applied in one week.

In total, the CCSS reports as 2,150,520 doses of vaccine placed Of the 2,511,645 that have been received by the country (85.62%), only 77,943 doses remain in the security reserve. Of the doses placed, 1,409,778 are first doses (65.66%) and 740,742 are second doses (34.44%).

40.28% of the target population (≈3.50 million according to the latest official estimate) have received the vaccine: 21.16% have the complete two-dose schedule.

The number of the population to be vaccinated and the number of people that make up each priority group are pending to be updated by including people between 12 to 17 years, 11 months and 29 days; as well as the inclusion of other groups of people, risk factors, etc. INEC estimates that the total population of age to be vaccinated in the country is 4,274,344 people.

In the first priority group, made up of some 110,000 people from the first line of response against the pandemic, older adults institutionalized in long-stay centers and their caregivers, the application of 236,885 doses of vaccine is recorded, of which 135,619 correspond to first doses and 101,266 to second doses . Thus, 123.29% of the original estimate of people who make up group 1 have already received the first dose and the 92.06% of the total have their complete scheme.

With respect to second priority group, made up of some 850,000 people over 58 years of age, 1,337,647 doses of vaccine have been placed, of which 712,873 correspond to first doses and 624,774 to people with complete vaccination schedules. Thus, 83.86% of the second group already have the first dose and the 73.50% of the total have their complete vaccination scheme.

In the third priority group, made up of about 1,565,000 people between 12 and 58 years of age who present some risk factor such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory or kidney diseases, grade III and morbid obesity, as well as cancer patients and people with syndrome of Down, the application of 539,401 doses is reported, of which 524,699 correspond to first doses and 14,702 to second doses. Thus, 33.52% of the total of people who make up group 3 have already received the first dose and the 0.93% of the total have their complete scheme.

In the fourth priority group, made up of about 150 thousand people, the application of 24,837 first doses has already been registered (16.55% of the total). These doses have been applied to officials of the Ministry of Public Education, officials of private education centers, workers of Aqueducts and Sewers and of the National Children’s Trust.

Finally, in the fifth priority group 11,750 doses have been placed (1.42% of the total), as part of the strategy of not allowing any vaccine to be lost due to a lack of population of other priority groups.

For this week, the institution dispatched 83,080 doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca-Oxford and 81,510 doses of the biological from Pfizer-BioNTech in its network of health establishments, for a total of 164,590 doses. The lower number of doses distributed coincides with the weekly reduction in doses delivered by Pfizer and will continue throughout the month of June, as it will be until July that the company increases its vaccine shipments again.
