CBS: The Dutch drove 17 percent fewer kilometers in 2020

The Dutch covered almost 17 percent fewer kilometers in motorized vehicles last year. Which reports the CBS. In 2019, a total of 151.8 billion kilometers was driven by passenger cars, motorcycles, buses and trucks. A year later, that had dropped to 126.7 billion kilometers.

The decrease is due to the lockdown measures that were necessary due to the corona crisis. Only the number of kilometers driven by heavy goods vehicles remained more or less the same. The coach sector shows the largest decline. Touring buses drove almost 65 percent fewer kilometers than in 2020. The decline in regular service buses was relatively limited: 8.8 percent.

Most kilometers were covered by passenger cars. They are responsible for 78 percent of the total number of kilometers. Statistics Netherlands also looked at the number of kilometers traveled per fuel type. Only fully electric vehicles drove more kilometers. According to CBS, this is due to the fact that there were more electric cars than a year ago.

Due to the corona crisis, the total number of kilometers traveled by Dutch people decreased by almost a third in 2020, it turned out last week from figures from the CBS. This was most visible in train traffic, which decreased by 60 percent.
