Causes of sudden eye redness

1- Allergies

If redness of the eye occurs immediately after exposure to some substances, such as pollen, dirt, dust, or animal dander, this is evidence of an allergy, especially if it is accompanied by itching, burning, sneezing, and a stuffy nose.

2- Dry eyes

Eye redness becomes a sure sign of dehydration if the patient also suffers from:

Eye burning.

Blurry vision.

Excessive tearing.

Not feeling comfortable when wearing contact lenses.

3- Conjunctivitis

People with red eyes should be treated with extreme caution, as there is a possibility that they may have conjunctivitis, which is an infectious disease caused by bacteria or viruses.

4- Bursting of blood vessels in the eye

When the tiny blood vessels under the surface of the eye burst, due to sneezing vigorously, carrying heavy objects, severe vomiting, or taking liquid medications, blood leaks out, causing the whites to turn bright red.

5- Keratitis

Some people find it very difficult to differentiate between conjunctivitis and keratitis, because they have similar symptoms, such as redness, but the latter does not cause discharge from the eye.

6- Glaucoma

A disease with an increased risk of infection at the age of 60 years, in which fluid accumulates in the front of the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve, and thus exposure to vision loss.

Eye redness is one of the most common symptoms of glaucoma, in addition to:

Eye pain.

Headache.

Blurred vision.

The appearance of halos or rainbows in the field of vision.

– Antihistamines and decongestants for allergy sufferers.

– Moisturizing drops for patients with dry eyes.

– Antibiotics for patients with conjunctivitis.

In addition to drug treatment, the patient must adhere to some instructions, the most important of which are:

– Not rubbing the eye.

Apply cold compresses to the affected eye to reduce redness.

Avoid eye cosmetics.

Do not stare at electronic panels, such as mobile phones and computers.
