Members of Switzerland’s Catholic-Christian Church debated “marriage for all” on Saturday at an extraordinary synod in Zurich. The vast majority of them expressed themselves for a model which implies equality of partners, regardless of gender.
During an advisory vote, the members had to choose one of the four models presented “in order to deepen the biblical, systematic-theological, liturgical and pastoral aspects”, specifies the Catholic-Christian Church of Switzerland in a press release. .
They broadly embraced the model “which sees the current understanding of marriage as relationship-oriented and thus implies equality of partners, regardless of gender.”
According to this model, same-sex partnerships “are celebrated liturgically and understood theologically in the same way as different-sex partnerships”. The Catholic-Christian Church has been offering a rite of blessing for same-sex partnerships since 2004, the statement said.
