Catering, private contacts, travel: what to expect for the National Security Council this Wednesday

The National Security Council, which brings together the federal government and the federated entities, is expected to confirm, on the basis of indications from the group of experts in charge of deconfinement (GEES), the implementation of phase 3 of deconfinement from next Monday.

Lhe National Security Council will meet this Wednesday from 9:00 am. The objective will be to determine the modalities of the implementation of phase 3 of the deconfinement, scheduled from next Monday, June 8. The reopening of Horeca establishments will be discussed, as well as tourism and the expansion of private contacts.

New Covid-19 contaminations have passed the 100 mark with 98 new cases detected on Monday, according to figures published on Tuesday by the Crisis Center and the FPS Public Health. The slight rebound in the epidemic does not seem to be happening, to the surprise of experts.

The National Security Council, which brings together the federal government and the federated entities, should therefore confirm, on the basis of the indications from the group of experts in charge of deconfinement (GEES), the implementation of phase 3 of deconfinement from Monday next.

The gradual resumption of tourist activities as well as the reopening of restaurants, terraces and cafes will be analyzed, while the French and Dutch neighbors have already reopened.

The CNS should also study the conditions for expanding social contacts, consider the resumption of worship services under certain conditions or even allow the organization of events of various sizes.

The GEES for a broadening of contacts

The group of experts in charge of the deconfinement strategy (GEES) wishes to put the rules in terms of social “contact bubble” on the table of the next National Security Council (CNS), in order to see if they can be adjusted, indicated Thursday the infectious disease specialist at the head of the GEES, Erika Vlieghe.

Social contacts are still on the CNS’s agenda, she said. The four-person rule will therefore be further discussed. The question is whether social contact cannot be limited in any other way, without strictly sticking to the four people, says Erika Vlieghe.

However, not everything will be allowed from Monday. During the previous CNS, on May 13, Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès had announced that all cultural, sporting, tourist and recreational events were prohibited until June 30. In addition, no sporting, professional and amateur competition can take place in Belgium until July 31. Mass events like festivals are banned until August 31.
