GENEVA – case of infection COVID-19 the world has reached 10 million worldwide, killing nearly half a million since the outbreak last year.

“That number is roughly double the number of severe influenza diseases recorded every year,” the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement, as reported by Channel News Asia on Sunday (6/28/2020).

North America, Latin America and Europe each account for about 25 percent of cases. While Asia and the Middle East each contributed around 11 percent and nine percent.

So far, there have been more than 497 thousand deaths related to this virus, about the same as the number of influenza deaths reported each year.

The pandemic has now entered a new phase, with India and Brazil battling more than 10,000 cases per day. Both countries accounted for more than one third of all new cases in the past week.

Brazil reported a record 54,700 new cases on June 19. Some researchers say the number of deaths in Latin America could increase to more than 380 thousand in October, from around 100,000 this week.

The United States, which has reported the most cases, with more than 2.5 million cases of infection, managed to slow the spread of the virus in May. But, there has been an increase in cases in recent weeks, especially in rural areas and other places that were previously unaffected.

Globally the increase in the number of daily cases is in the range of one to two percent, far smaller than last March with a range of 10 percent increase every day.
