La Paz, Aug 1 (EFE) .- Bolivia reported this Monday a 4% increase in covid-19 infections in the last week and the authorities foresee a de-escalation of cases in the coming days, in the middle of the fifth wave that crosses the country.

The Minister of Health, Jeyson Auza, delivered at a press conference the 30th epidemiological report on the situation of the pandemic in the country from a third-level hospital in Potosí, in which he indicated that 39 deaths and 34,380 new infections were registered. in the last seven days.

“The number of cases is slowing down, that makes us think, as we announced before, that this week and next week we may be able to reach the peak of the wave and start to go down in terms of the number of cases,” Auza said. .

According to the weekly report of the nine departments, 33.5% of the cases are concentrated in Cochabamba, 21.9% in Santa Cruz, 16.4% in La Paz, the three make up the so-called central axis of the country.

In the other regions, 9.4% of the cases were reported in Tarija, Chuquisaca with 7.8%, Oruro with 4.2%, Potosí with 4.1%, Beni with 1.6% and Pando with 1. 1 %.

The minister recommended that on the occasion of the National Holidays, on August 6, “concentrations” be avoided and suggested “in the regions of greatest contagion that modalities of blended and virtual classes be applied in educational centers.”

The Ministry of Health pointed out that to date 14,647,071 doses have already been applied between the first, the second, the third, the single dose and the fourth to those over 5 years of age who are part of the 10.2 million people who make up the vaccinable population.

Of the nine departments, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, La Paz and Chuquisaca account for 90% of the new cases in the last week.

Bolivia has accumulated 1,037,500 cases of covid-19 and 22,061 deaths since the first infections were reported in March 2020. The fatality rate in the fifth wave is 0.1%. EFE
