The ‘big red boots’ were on sale for fifteen minutes from 5 p.m. Dutch time for $ 350 per pair. They are now offered for a multiple of that amount via Marktplaats. The highest asking price is even more than 1000 euros.
According to de New York Times the shoes are shaped like AirPods, Apple’s wireless earphones. “The color red is reminiscent of clown noses and the wrapper of Babybel cheese. They are cartoonish, but not meant as a joke.”
They are not necessarily comfortable or very easy to use, as this video on TikTok shows:
“Not to be missed”, calls fashion magazine Elle the shoes. “Every poor soul is forced to look at these shoes and cry. Or laugh. Or both.”
“Monstrous”, is the qualification given to it authoritative Vogue van Anna Wintour depends on it. “It’s a gimmick and that’s exactly what fashion lovers love. These shoes won’t go unnoticed by anyone and everyone is talking about them.”
The reactions on the MSCHF Instagram page vary. “350 euros to walk around like a clown?”, someone wonders in surprise. Another suspects that there is a social experiment behind the shoes to investigate how easily people are influenced by social media to make nonsensical decisions.
However, not everyone is outspokenly negative. A striking number of people praise the marketing strategy behind the shoes. “I’d sell my non-existent kids for a pair of these shoes,” one commented. Hopefully joking.
