Carlos Alcaraz: The Rising Star of Tennis Who Defeats Djokovic at Wimbledon

The world of tennis continues with the reactions to the vibrant Wimbledon final in which the Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz managed to win the title after beating Novak Djokovic.

A final on which a historical tennis figure such as Boris Becker, who in the podcast ‘Das Gelbe vom Ball’ of Eurosport Germany, analyzed in this way the rapid growth of Alcaraz on grass. “Alcaraz couldn’t play last year on grass last year and a year later he arrives at Queen’s after his unfortunate semi-final with Djokovic in Paris. He played Rinderknech in the first game, I watched him and actually I should have lost and said “I’m not good on grass”, but something happened. And he not only wins at Queen’s, but he goes to Wimbledon and plays for two weeks like he’s never played before. Something happened between heaven and earth with the young Carlos Alcaraz”.

The German tennis player also wanted to highlight the great work of the Alcaraz team. “I also want to mention Juan Carlos Ferrero, because he has done an incredible job. Not just in these last two weeks, but in these last five years. He has turned a diamond in the rough into a Wimbledon champion. It has been an incredible performance not only by Carlos, but by the entire team.”

Becker highlighted Alcaraz’s ability to adapt on the pitch and how he is constantly learning to continue growing. “When you play on grass it’s like a different sport because you move differently. But there are many tennis players who cannot move on grass and now many of the great players are learning to play on grass courts. And Carlos Alcaraz is leading the way. He traveled to London before playing at Queen’s, improved in the tournament, continued training in London and then improved match by match at Wimbledon. You can learn to play on grass by watching videos of those who know how to do it. Watching Roger Federer, Andy Murray, watching Rafa Nadal, that’s what everyone should do to learn from the best who have shown how it’s done. The big four also struggled to go from clay to grass, but they took their time to play a different type of tennis, and that’s one aspect of Alcaraz: he’s still a student, an apprentice who wants to learn from the greats and isn’t afraid to try.”

A final in which Becker believes that it can mean a changing of the guard in world tennis. “Alcaraz’s victory like Djokovic I see as a changing of the guard. It is a game that will go down in history and we will talk about it for ten years. It was a match in which Alcaraz came of age. He won the US Open against Casper Ruud and was number one in the world, but in the end you have to prove it in a Grand Sam final against the best, and that is Djokovic”.

Becker also points out that he sees Alcaraz as the successor on the circuit to Federer, Nadal and Djokovic and highlighted the ease and enthusiasm that he displays on the court. “I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic ever again. Three players who have won 20 or more Grand Slams. In my time Sampras achieved 14 and now there are three with more than 20 grand. Who can happen to them? I think Carlos Alcaraz can do it, and the world will thank him that we have seen such a nice, almost innocent-looking young Spaniard who plays tennis as if it were the most natural thing in the world”.

Finally, Becker assured that this defeat does not mean the end of the Djokovic era, since the Serb will still try to match Margaret Court’s absolute record of 24 Grand Slams. “I don’t think it’s the end of the Djokovic era. The final was an example of how a tennis match should be. A lot of people become tennis fans because of that, and I hope they can repeat these matches in New York or Melbourne. I don’t think Djokovic will stop playing. One would have to wonder what keeps Djokovic motivated, and that is Grand Slam 24 to match Margaret Court. He is already the male tennis player with the greatest but he also wants the total record ”.
