- The sedatives required for the surgical intervention cause the cow’s blood pressure to drop and the blood circulation deteriorates.
- the sedatives and narcotics used must be broken down in the liver, which is an energy-intensive process.
- Despite the sterile work of veterinarians and auxiliary staff, the entry of germs cannot be completely avoided when operating under stable conditions. The immune system has to react to what costs a lot of energy. At the same time, stress and lack of energy weaken the immune system, which increases the risk of wound infection.

Without consistent follow-up care, the chances are bad
If such adequate follow-up care cannot be provided in the practice, then an operation to solve the underlying problem (difficult birth, displacement of the abomasum, etc.) is not very effective. Without this extra supply, a cow can only “fail” miserably in most cases – especially if it is pre-stressed by previous illnesses (e.g. metabolic disorder or a claw lesion).
