The staff is muzzled, the residents don’t know anything. The Berg retirement home in St. Gallenkappel SG has been in a state of emergency since the regional portal «Linth24» made a hair-raising case of abuse public. A 43-year-old carer is accused of having committed a demented resident in June.

The man, a Tunisian citizen, has meanwhile been arrested, but according to the St. Gallen public prosecutor’s office he is now free again subject to certain conditions. The investigation against the accused residing in the Rapperswil region is ongoing. He is said to have been caught red-handed in the act!

Resident: «Simply terrible!»
“The care center is deeply affected by the incident,” writes home manager Bruno Kehl when asked by BLICK. “The employees were informed personally in June. You have been offered an internal contact point for personal processing. ” In the Berg retirement home, high demands are placed on the professional and emotional quality of the work. The respectful and dignified care of all residents is always the focus.

The residents of the house, or at least some of them, did not claim to have heard of the sexual assault yesterday. “That happened here?” Asks an elderly lady on her behalf. And adds, shocked: “Something like this is unimaginable, just terrible!”

After the incident became known, wild rumors were circulating in St. Gallenkappel about a possible previous history. Former work colleagues claim to have had negative experiences with the Tunisian in the past. However, these allegations cannot be verified, also because the nurse could not be reached to comment.

No further attacks known
«The home management is not aware of any further border violations by the accused against home residents. Clarifying this comprehensively is part of the ongoing investigations by the public prosecutor, ”says Bruno Kehl. How long the man has been working in the home he leaves open with reference to the protection of privacy. It also remains unclear whether there have been complaints from other employees.

What is clear, however, is that the suspended nurse is being investigated for desecration. This criminal offense comes into play when someone performs sexual acts on a person who is already incapable of military service. Either permanently, for example because of a disability, or temporarily – be it drunk or on medication. For the man, the presumption of innocence applies.
