caregivers at Paule-de-Viguier hospital call for protest

It is a call for help launched by the personnel of the birth sector of thePaule-de-Viguier hospital in Toulouse. Caregivers, through the Sud Santé union, are calling for mobilization and announcing a rally this Tuesday, June 7, Place Saint-Cyprien at 2 p.m. They denounce a lack of resources leading to obstetric violence for patients at the Toulouse University Hospital.

In a statement, the South health union affirms that 5,200 births are performed at the Paule-de-Viguier hospital each year, while the establishment was initially designed for 3,500 annual deliveries. Added to this is a waiting list of 1,500 patients.

As a result, midwives, nursing assistants and doctors have no choice but to run on day or night shifts with an hourly amplitude of 12 hours per shift. The staff no longer have the time to take the time to properly, humanely support each patient and her family,” explains Victor Alava, deputy secretary of the Sud santé social union in Haute-Garonne.

No epidural for lack of room available

Difficulties which translate concretely into the care of patients according to the union: delay in the fitting of epidurals and even, “during busy days or nights”, of future mothers who give birth without anesthesia “for lack of a delivery room available “. The accompaniment of certain patients is thus “too hasty and brutal for lack of time” and generates obstetrical violence, indicate the caregivers. In addition, some rooms are said to be dilapidated, having never been renovated 19 years after the opening of the establishment.

As everywhere in France, many maternities on the outskirts of the Toulouse metropolis have closed in recent years to concentrate in a single establishment a real ‘baby factory'”, deplores the staff, accusing the “policies of austerity and restriction health budget.
