CARDS. These departments where the Covid-19 has, for the time being, almost disappeared

Depending on the territory, some departments present a relatively very calm epidemic situation at present. According to the latest figures from Public health France, the incidence rate now stands at 44.2 positive cases in Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants in France. Thirteen departments have an incidence rate of less than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to date.

Figures at the lowest for these thirteen departments …

The most encouraging figure to date is found in the Some, where the indicator is 9.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in this department of more than 490,000 inhabitants. The Corrèze displays a similar value with 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, ie the second department with the lowest incidence rate.

Behind these two territories where the presence of the virus is the least strong in France, eleven other territories also record a particularly low indicator of less than 20 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, according to the latest report from the health agency on Friday. October 15, 2021: Cantal (12 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Landes (14), Aisne (16), Indre (17), Meuse (18), Vosges (18), Morbihan ( 19), Allier (20), Finistère (20), Nièvre (20) and Mayotte (17.9).

… but the curve goes up for some others

So if the epidemic panorama is rather optimistic in France today, small fluctuations are also evident in certain territories. This is what happened in Lozère in recent days. This department of 76,000 inhabitants has had the highest incidence rate in mainland France for several days.

The indicator went from 28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 1is October to 102 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on October 11, according to the latest figures from Public Health France. A situation mainly linked to two clusters detected in schools.

More generally, if we compare the incidence rate of October 11 and that of October 5, ie seven days before, we see that the indicator is on the rise in 47 departments. As in Finistère (+ 70%), Vendée (+ 69%), Lozère (+ 59%), Aveyron (+ 53%) or Meuse (+ 52%). But it is still too early to draw the trends from these fluctuations and these territories still remain in the green, with an incidence rate well below the alert threshold.

Should we fear a fifth wave?

Here is the variation in the incidence rate between October 5 and 11 by department, in percentage:

So, should we fear a fifth wave in France? “If a rebound in the epidemic were to occur, it would be gradual and would not immediately impact the health service”, reassures Mircea Sofonea, lecturer in epidemiology and disease evolution at the University of Montpellier, with Ouest-France.

In any case, the coming period requires “Greater vigilance”, alerted Public Health France in its weekly press conference on October 8.
