Cardiovascular Comorbidities Can Be Vaccinated AstraZeneca

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian Association of Cardiovascular Specialists (PERKI) revealed that they had conducted an analysis regarding patients with cardiovascular comorbidities to AstraZeneca vaccination. This analysis was carried out due to the occurrence of post-vaccination (KIPI) Covid-19 after being given the AstraZeneca vaccine for those who have comorbidities.

PERKI said the expert agreement that vaccination is one of the important efforts in handling the pandemic, namely to break the chain of transmission. Then the study that has been carried out by BPOM related to this vaccine, as well as the WHO study.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is reported to have good effectiveness and has been approved for use in the prevention of transmission. Then a rare syndrome of blood clots and decreased platelet levels was reported to occur 4-10 days after vaccination.

A causal relationship between the vaccine and the occurrence of thrombosis (blood clotting) is suspected, but the hypothesis about the biological mechanism still requires further investigation. Then the reported risk of thrombosis related to AstraZeneca vaccine is very small, around 3.6 cases per 1 million people. Currently, more than 78 million doses of AstraZeneca are used in Europe, and the incidence of thrombosis due to Covid-19 is reported to be 207.1 per 1 million. This number is higher than the thrombosis caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“Patients with cardiovascular comorbidities including coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, congenital heart disease, history of typical venous thromboembolism (VTE) such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the legs or pulmonary embolism, presence of intracardiac thrombus and routine use of anticoagulants for these conditions, can use the AstraZeneca vaccine. as long as the patient is in a stable condition and meets the criteria recommended by Perki,” wrote PERKI’s letter received by CNBC Indonesia, Friday (18/06/2021).

Meanwhile, patients with a history of decreased platelet levels due to the use of heparin belong to the group that requires special attention, and can get the vaccine if possible. The distribution of AstraZeneca-related thrombosis cases in Europe is reported to be more in young adults than in the elderly.

“Recommendations for the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine according to age are returned to the recommendations of BPOM”.

PERKI recommends that if there are specific complaints such as severe headache, impaired vision, shortness of breath or chest pain, to swelling in one leg, the public can seek medical attention at the nearest health facility. Each recipient of the AstraZeneca vaccine is also monitored according to the AEFI guidelines.
