cardiac emergencies remain a priority at CHU de Nîmes

Cardiovascular pathologies represent the second cause of death in France. But since the start of containment, “there is a very significant drop (-40%) in heart attacks and cardiac emergencies, says Professor Guillaume Cayla, head of the cardiology department at the University Hospital of Nîmes. Of many patients arrive in cardiology with an advanced infarction stage however it isa disease that needs to be treated very quickly to avoid irreversible heart muscle damage.

“I’m a chronic heart patient, I call my cardiologist if I’m not feeling well”

The main reason for this drop is probably the fear of calling 15 (fear of disturbing emergency services, fear of Covid-19 in the emergency room or in hospital.) But the CHU wants to reassure patients. He recalls that the different services have been organized (SAMU, emergencies and cardiology service), care for cardiac emergencies is assured and secure, patients and caregivers are systematically fitted with masks during procedures.

At the Nîmes University Hospital, circuits are dedicated to non-Covid patients, so as to avoid patients crossing paths. Chronic heart disease is monitored and managed to detect any signs of worsening. Chronic treatments should also be continued.Do not hesitate to approach your usual cardiologist. We are all mobilized to be able to welcome patients safely“, reminds Professor Cayla.
