Car Free Day: Close key boulevards in Sofia, Bulgaria

TO Car-free day today numerous initiatives are planned in Sofia. The event will start at 10:30 on “Gen. Y. Gurko”, in the section between Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi Blvd. and Vasil Levski Blvd.

The Metropolitan Municipality, in collaboration with the Danish Embassy and the Center for Urban Mobility, are organizing a bicycle tour entitled Happy Biking – Healthy Living. The parade will start at 11:00 from “Gen. Y. Gurko”, in the section between “Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi” Blvd. and “Vasil Levski” Blvd., and will pass along a path to South Park and back.

The installation “You are Sofia, Sofia is green” will show Sofia’s progress as a green city. Today the first two cameras for counting cyclists will be operational in Sofia, made by the Technical Universities of Gabrovo and Sofia, again as part of the INNOAIR project.

The European Mobility Week is an annual campaign for sustainable urban mobility, organized by the European Organizational Secretariat with the support of the European Commission, in which Sofia participates annually. Its goal is to reduce traffic jams, the carbon footprint and the negative cumulative effect in the city. The motto of this year’s campaign is “Combine and move” and it promotes walking and cycling.

With a carousel with a retro trolley and a bike ride on 20 September the people of Pleven participated in the European Mobility Week. The citizens of Blagoevgrad will also join the initiative.
