Canton Zurich has fewer immigrants from other regions of the country

The population in the canton of Zurich has still grown in the past year – but much more slowly than in previous years. The main reason is a deeper so-called “migration balance” between Zurich and the rest of Switzerland.

Zurich is apparently no longer as attractive to residents from other cantons as it already is: people from other regions still move to the canton of Zurich when they leave it the other way around. However, the migration balance has continued to decrease, the canton announced on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the migration balance with foreign countries decreased only slightly compared to the previous year. This reduced immigration from other parts of Switzerland is the main reason for the slowdown in Zurich’s population growth last year.

This was 0.7 percent. The last time growth was similarly low was in 2005, with the Unterland and Glattal recording the strongest growth, while the city of Zurich recorded only modest growth. At the end of 2021, around 1.56 million people lived in the canton of Zurich. This is around 11,000 more than at the end of 2020. (sda)
