Two mountaineers lost their lives in a mountain accident at Weisshorn (VS) on Saturday, the cantonal police of Valais announced on Sunday. According to the first observations, they would have made a fall of nearly 500 meters.
A mountain guide from Graubünden, 57, and his 38-year-old client, who lives in the canton of Bern, left early on Saturday morning to climb the Weisshorn via the ridge. Having no news in the morning, family members alerted the emergency services. Several search flights were carried out by Air Zermatt.
Discovered in the late afternoon
The two bodies were discovered in the late afternoon at an altitude of about 3,800 meters. The rescuers could only note the death of the two climbers, said the police.
According to the first observations, the climbers were roped up during their ascent to the summit. At an altitude of about 4300 meters, for reasons as yet unknown, they fell about 400 to 500 meters.
