As everywhere in the world, research for a vaccine against covid-19 continues in Quebec. In fact, a researcher working at the University of Laval has apparently found a new path. Indeed, according to the Pr Denis Leclerc, it would be entirely possible to work on an inhaler vaccine in order to directly target the lungs, an organ affected by the disease.
A microbiology-infectiology researcher, the latter believes that his solution would be more suitable since it makes it possible to achieve the pulmonary immunity so sought after by scientists. However, this would be a first for the first time and there is no evidence that this idea can actually work even if intrapulmonary administration appears to be gaining credit. To date, the Pr Leclerc seems to hesitate between different ways of acting, either by conventional inhaler, like taking ventoline, or by nebulizer.
An inhaler vaccine?
According to him, the weakness of the lungs makes older people much more vulnerable to covid-19. On the contrary, children themselves more easily develop immunity because their system is always adaptive. As a result, the latter, even if they do not recognize covid-19 since the disease is a first, succeed in creating an effective defense system. In the idea, the objective of the Pr Leclerc would therefore be to “wake up” the innate immune system of the elderly in order to make it adaptive too.
Medication pending
Until his vaccine is released, hospitals could rely on a nanoparticle developed by Professor Leclerc and his teams, which could slow the spread of the disease. A nanoparticle that health experts all welcome. When asked about this, the Pr Leclerc ensures that this particle could act as a real decoy, thus triggering an organism response.
