Trudeau announced the assistance in a brief intervention at the Global Goal: Unite for our Future virtual “summit”, which aims to raise funds to fight the pandemic.

“We have to recognize that this pandemic is hitting hardest on already vulnerable populations […]. We have to work hand in hand to ensure that a vaccine is affordable and accessible to everyone, ”said Mr. Trudeau.

The Prime Minister said that Ottawa would invest $ 180 million to deal with the immediate consequences of the crisis on humanitarian aid and development.

Canada will also provide $ 120 million for the device called the ACT Accelerator.

This system, set up last April by the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Commission, France and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to accelerate the development and production of diagnostic products and vaccines against COVID-19 and to ensure equitable access.

The Global Goal summit, accompanied by a concert broadcast on social media and television channels on Saturday, is organized by Global Citizen and the European Commission, said Ottawa in a statement.
