Canada’s Employment Rate Rises in August Amidst Record Population Growth: Statistics Canada

OTTAWA, Sept. 8, 2023 (Xinhua) — Canada’s employment rate rose by 40,000, or 0.2 per cent, in August, which was outpaced by population growth of 103,000, or 0.3 per cent, Statistics Canada said on Friday.

The national statistics agency said that the employment rate continued to gain in the context of record population growth.

According to the agency, the population aged 15 years and over has increased by 81,000 people on average per month since the beginning of 2023. In light of this pace of population growth, the employment rate is required to grow by about 50,000 per month to remain stable. However, since January 2023, employment has increased by 25 thousand on average per month.

Accordingly, the employment rate, that is, the proportion of the population aged 15 and above who is working, fell by 0.1 percentage point to 61.9 percent in August, and fell by 0.6 percentage points compared to January 2023, the agency said.

Statistics Canada said the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.5 percent after three consecutive monthly increases in May, June and July./end of news/
