If the containment and the countless meetings in videoconference for work or for school taught us something, it is that the webcams of Mac laptops quickly showed their limits ! Several solutions from camera manufacturers have emerged these latest weeks, and in a slightly different genre, Camo stands out from the crowd since it transforms an iPhone or iPad into an HD webcam.
We had the opportunity to take over a beta of the application, which is now available to everyone. The Camo solution consists of app iOS (iOS 12 and later) and a app macOS (macOS 10.13 and later), both free. After installation and pairing, the iOS device becomes a video source to be used in most software on the market: Zoom, Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Slack, WebEx Teams, in Chrome as well. On the other hand, FaceTime is not supported, nor web video conferencing clients in Safari (the list of compatible software is to be consulted here).
Camo Studio, the software for Mac, contains a number of settings to improve video capture and even select the desired lens (the ultra wide angle of the latest iPhone can give interesting results). The free version limits video quality to 720p, without the choice of lens, and the image will display a watermark. These restrictions can be removed with an annual subscription that costs $ 39.99. A version for Windows is in the pipeline.
