Call for Papers: Warfare in Ancient Times Conference (WAWIC)

Papers on any aspect, era or global location of Ancient Warfare are welcome to apply in order to enable a multi-disciplinary discussion. We invite archaeological, philological as well as historical contributions and papers with a focus on the Greco-Roman world as well as the ancient Near East, ancient Egypt and all surrounding cultures. The conference aims equally at doctoral students, early career researchers and established academics.

The WAWIC will be held in-person in Chicago, IL for North American participants, and simultaneously in Graz, Austria for European participants. These in-person gatherings will be connected via Zoom.

Presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes. Online presentations are possible. However, participation in presence is desirable if there are no special personal reasons preventing it. Depending on the funding, participants in Graz (especially doctoral students) will ideally have part of their travel expenses reimbursed.

Additionally, we also attempt to provide the possibility of publishing parts of the papers as conference proceedings afterwards.

For individual contributions, please send an abstract of 300 words and a brief bio to Jenn Finn ([email protected]) for North America BEFORE March 31st 2024 and the Institute of Classics in Graz ([email protected]) for Europe BEFORE December 31st 2023.

We also encourage submissions of panel proposals. Special panels can be accommodated at either of our locations. We particularly welcome transcontinental panels and will facilitate their connection through Zoom. To submit a panel proposal, kindly provide an abstract outlining the panel’s theme, as well as individual abstracts for each contributor, and send them to the organizers.

Proposals for transcontinental panels as well as for panels in Graz should be submitted by 31st December, ideas for panels in Chicago by March 31st 2024.
