Togolese Minister of Health Moustafa Mijiyawa called in a statement on Tuesday for “increased vigilance” regarding the presence of the Marburg virus disease in West Africa, cases of which have been detected in neighboring Ghana.

This appeal comes in a context where an increased number of cases of viral haemorrhagic fevers have been reported for several weeks in Africa, bringing together a set of diseases including that induced by the Marburg virus, Lassa fever and Ebola fever.

Faced with this situation, the Minister of Health said he had taken a series of measures, including the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance through early warning, notification and investigations.

The provisions also include the organization of the management of possible cases and the sensitization of the population to preventive measures, especially among people at risk.

Contagious and serious, Marburg virus disease is manifested by ordinary signs, similar to those of other viral hemorrhagic fevers, in particular fever, intense fatigue, headaches, as well as muscle, chest or abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea or even vomiting.
