In a few weeks, the automatic withdrawal of stamp duty will arrive on the current accounts of Italian savers. But there are exceptions that allow you to not pay the tax. In fact, by presenting the ISEE, the stamp duty is not paid on the current account but few know it. The exemption is also obtained by not exceeding the average stock limit of 5,000 euros. Stamp duty is automatically debited from the current account at the end of the month. The total annual amount is € 34.20 and is divided into four installments of € 8.55 per quarter. Then, the charge is made on March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31 of each year.

The holders of savings books and bank or post office current accounts are obliged to pay the stamp duty.

But what are the exemptions for not paying?

As stated in ours guide on the current account, the maximum average stock limit, which must be respected in order not to pay the tax, is below 5,000 euros. However, you have to be careful if you have two current accounts with the same institution. In fact, even if the value on the accounts is below 5,000 euros, the stock is given by the sum of the two stocks. Therefore, it is possible that the threshold is exceeded.

But there is also another possibility that allows you to not pay the stamp duty. It deals with of the exemption for low-income families, as already mentioned in our article: a nasty surprise for savers will come to the current account at the end of the month

The beneficiaries of this exemption are those who have an updated ISEE of less than 7,500 euros. To obtain the exemption, you must submit the self-certification to your bank by May 31 of each year. Specifically, the account holder who submits the request for exemption falls into the category of holders excluded from bank charges.
